Materials and Methods: Out of the baseline sample of the IDEFICS Study, 2913 children aged 2–9 years were included in this study. The focus of the IDEFICS Study lies in exploring the risks for overweight and obesity in children as well as associated long-term consequences. Beyond pure research, IDEFICS offered activities for health promotion and prevention in kindergartens and schools.

The European IDEFICS (Identification and Prevention of Dietary- and Lifestyle-induced Health Effects in Children and Infants) Study investigates risk factors of diet- and lifestyle-related In 2007 and 2008 we already reported about the aims and some first results of the large European IDEFICS study. 1,2 This project investigates the health effects of diet, lifestyle and social environment in European children aged 2-10 years. The researchers have developed, implemented and are now evaluating specific intervention approaches to reduce the prevalence of diet- and lifestyle-related diseases. This investigated the causes of of diet- and lifestyle-related diseases and disorders with a strong focus on overweight and obesity. IDEFICS/I.Family follow-up study – lifestyle and health. From 2007 to 2016 more than 16,000 participants from 9 European countries participated in the IDEFICS/I.Family study. Families contributed to these large studies and provided important insights for health research.
